Root password, single user mod
Hey everyone,
In OS X 10.2 and 10.3 one was able to boot up in single user mode and gain root access to the machine. I was wondering if this is still possible in 10.4. If so, how? Thanks.

Do you mean as in a non-graphical console? Just enter -s boot command in the darwin startup console.

Sorry, I don't think I was clear enough. In Mac OS 10.2 and 10.3 one was able to boot into single user mode, mount the hard drive, and change the root password without knowing the original password:
In 10.2: /sbin/fsck -y /sbin/mount -wu / /sbin/SystemStarter In 10.3: /sbin/fsck -y /sbin/mount -uw / /usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d cd /var/db/netinfo; netinfod -s local /sbin/SystemStarter Is this still possible in 10.4? |

yup, i just walked someone through it last week, it was just 2 commands when i did it
the first one will boot OSX without bringing up the GUI and leaving you logged in as root, after a minute or so you can just hit enter a few times and see your prompt, then run passwd and reboot, when i tried it i was getting a lot of log messages printed to the screen after it booted, but they can be ignored and they don't interfere with what you type

Interesting....
I got lots of log messages, but pressed enter after a few minutes. I changed the password for root and one of the users on the machine, and it apppeared to be successful. However, when I rebooted the computer, the passwords were not changed. |
