something terribly wrong with the screen/freezing

something terribly wrong with the screen/freezing

every so often the screen will do something weird. its hard to describe, but its like it pixilates and some of the pixels shift horizontally creating kind of an echo affect on the images. also sometimes it just freezes that way for several seconds. in addition, that grey box that tells me i have to restart the computer in like 4 languages pops up every so often. i dont know whats wrong, ive tried using cocktail to empty the caches and whatnot. please help!
