The end of apple's common sense?

http://apple.slashdot.org/article.p...238235&from=rss

So theyre leaving the whole PPC architecture behind (when its technologically superior and moving to a worse intel architectures (which is DRM ridden).

You know what apple, you just lost a potential customer.

Everyone is moving toward DRM. Life is starting to get very, very scary, especially when the people you thought you could trust, ie Apple, turn to the dark side....

I dont WANT DRM. I want to be able to distribute my programs that I write without paying extortionate fees to ms. I want to be able to do what I'm allowed to in terms of copying under "fair use".

Surely there is something wrong with people who cannot see this

1. It stops you from doing things you're legally entitled to do. There must be some law against that.
2. MORE BRAND LOCK-IN. MS has been accused of being amonopoly so many times in surprised they havent been shut down already, but this takes the p*ss.
3. So I send the occasional music track to a friend to listen to, that doesnt make me a major pirate, just drop it.
4. Applications you like to run wont be available
5. applications will cost more on TCPA platforms
6. Small companies will struggle to pay to develop apps for TCPA platforms, its favouring major companies.

theres more but i cba to post it all.

Apple move to x86

I've posted my thoughts on Apple's x86 migration on my blog:
(check the link, since I'm too lazy to explain it here again)

Apple migrating to x86

Do you think I'm on track? How else does their migration make sense?

LinuxPenguin agrees: The article is unlikely to happen, but an interesting idea.

I like it

I've been waiting for MacOS X / x86 for so long... Now I bought my first Mac two months ago. Feels like home already, but I'd prefer OSX/x86 because I know the hardware much better.

By then, they'll have a hard time catching up with Novell and other Linux desktop distributors though.

But... Adobe just bought Macromedia.
... and there go all dreams of a Linux port of Photoshop or Flash.
They'll go proprietary first, I bet. The Photoshop port to OSX/x86 will probably be available at the time of the OS release. Who knows if there will ever be a Linux port?
Hmmm. Will OSX/x86 claim Linux or Windows territory? Both maybe? Will there be linux binary compatibility in OSX/x86? Vice versa too? A new big player in the server market? Questions over questions.

Very interesting. Good move, Apple.

M.

It doesn't make sense. I like my ol' G3. It's 500MHz is more powerful than my 2GHz I have on this machine. It runs faster. Now, it of course is buggy with OS X, but not that bad. I like the PPC architecture. If your processor doesn't need to run at half the 'speed' of another archecture to be faster, then you have a high quality product, my friend . I'm a hybrid myself, but I may soon be an AMD fanboy. Then when they go DRM, it's time I quit computers.

It won't be free, I am sure. They'll simply launch a huge marketing campaign to sell it. No problem. Why else should people buy Tiger (for the full price) although they just got their new Mac a few weeks ago?

It's the marketing that sells a product. Not the price. Although "free" is a very good marketing argument

Marketing or no marketing, good move or no good move, the moment apple announces plans for TCPA, they wont get custom out of me.

For those who skimmed this, apple ACTUALLY ARE going intel, its no longer a threat to IBM.

Anyone want to read the macrumors thead on this? It's >30 pages long, ~1000 replies and full of amusing replies like "I am officially going to shoot myself in the face"?

Remember folks, these are still rumors until the big Steve announces them on Monday at Apples WWDC.

Mods: want to move this to the Mac forum? I'm trying to make it a bit more lively in there

Not so fast M. . The reason I don't have a new Mac is because I can't afford one. It'd be cool to have one, but I can't afford it. If it was cheaper, maybe, but it's just too expensive and you don't get a good software choice for it.
