Hello everyone,
I as yet dont have 10.4 but would be intrested in knowning * as im a newbi to apple * if apple give you a upgrade option when they move to the next OS or is it a fresh install where you loose all your data and have to reinstall it all again. if their is an upgrade option how good is it b/c with windows xp home to pro was CRAP and nothing really worked theirafter. Please advise and give me some thoughts on it. from previous upgrades / new installs... thanks |

I can't say anything about 10.3-10.4 because I haven't gotten it from the developer community yet, but I can say that from 10.2-10.3 it was almost seamless.
Sure you had to reset a few preferences in your system preferences, and from that on it's pretty much just learning the new features,(100+) which shouldn't be too hard. Apple is pretty good about easy, being that it is one of their mottos. |

Given that 10.4 isn't out yet (soon!), I can't be certain but I've gone from 10.1 -> 10.2 -> 10.3 with no problems on various machines.
With this track record, I wouldn't be too worried about it ![]() If you do need to backup everything, it'll all be inside your user directory (/User/YourUserName) and you can just copy this onto backup media or another computer. Take anything you're worried about from /Applications too. Anyway, I'd wait for a week or so after Tiger's released and then have a good google around forums etc to see if people are having problems upgrading. If they're not - then go for it. --Simon

Darwin is good, basically just a solid Unix core with some extra apple added stuff. If you are a *nix junky, go for it!
And you can use Unix from your Mac at any time. /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app |

Welcome to the wonderful world of Apple...things truly are better here. It should be seamless and you should not lose any data. In my experience, upgrading from 10.1x to 10.2x to 10.3x, nothing has ever gone wrong and I have not lost any data. However, when you run the installer, you will see an option to archive stuff before the installer does it thing...I would recommend using this option just in case. |

I'm with the guys: I don't think there's going to be a problems with upgrading; I would highly doubt it judging by Apples track record in this and other areas
. Anyway if you haven't seen it already:http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/setup/ Laters all, Mark. |

IIRC, the install process will create a backup of the system and user folders too if you ask it too. Any problems, and you can restore it fairly easily.

Nevertheless I would always make a backup of my important files and make sure that the backup works. Even though I doubt it will be problem with upgrads its always nice to BE SURE!!!..
Always have a working backup (keyword is working)... Systems are human made and we all know how imperfect we are !! |
