Upgrading Mac 8.5.1 to OSX

We are having problems upgrading our power pc G3 266 MHz. We are trying to upgrade if from OS 8.5.1 to Mac OSX (not panther or jaguar just basic OSX) we put the OSX CD in and booted the computer from the CD, it then said that we must upgrade to Mac OS 9 first. So then we booted the computer from the OS9 CD. It at that point said we must update the firmware. We looked at the utilities folder on the OS 9 CD and it said that it couldn’t find the updates. We then tried to boot the computer normally and got an error saying:

Bootr, unknown word failed to boot apple imac open firmware 3.0 f3 built on....

The only way we can now get onto the computer it by entering C (enter) boot (enter) Does anyone know were we should go from here and how to complete the rest of our upgrade?
