Back dated email

Hello all,

a strange question just occured in my mind.

is there any way to send emails in backdate?

like if I send an email on July 7, 2004 but the date is shown July 7, 2000.

Is this possible by any means?

Yes, that's possible if you use a SMTP mail server to send out your emails. All you have to do is set your computer's date/time to whatever you want...then compose a message in your outlook express (or any email client you use) and send the email.

the previous answer will set the Date: header to some date in the past, but bear in mind that the message will have at least 1 Received: headers added to it before it gets to its final destination; these will have a date/time in them, so I'm not sure if this fits your expectations ? Just something you should be aware of, depending on who you are sending it to !

I guess the biggest question for doing this would be ~ WHY?

The only real reason to forge email headers that comes to mind would be for illicit purposes.
If the integrity of the header information comes into question then you are asking for trouble.
Just like forging header\packet information on files, there is always some forensic trace.

Backdating an email header is bad idea in real time, but not a bad question in theory.
