Angry Can't send/receive with client side, but can in Webmin interface

Hi gang. I need your help today. I have tried to figure this out for hours now, and frankly, I am frustrated. I am running Postfix version 2.1.4 on my Mandrake 10.1 official.
Problem #1: When I modify the "General Options" found in Webmin and try to save, I get error, "An error occurred while loading https://localhost:10000/postfix/save_opts_misc.cgi?myorigin_def=%24mydomain&myorigin=&mydestination_def=%24myhostname%2C+localhost.%24mydomain%2C+%24mydomain&mydestination=%24myhostname%2C+localhost.%24mydomain&notify_classes_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&notify_classes=&relayhost_def=__USE_FREE_FIELD__&relayhost=&always_bcc_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&always_bcc=&daemon_timeout_def=18000s&default_database_type_def=hash&default_transport_def=smtp&double_bounce_sender_def=double-bounce&hash_queue_depth_def=1&hash_queue_names_def=incoming%2C+active%2C+deferred%2C+bounce%2C+defer%2C+flush%2C+hold%2C+trace&hopcount_limit_def=50&delay_warning_time_def=__USE_FREE_FIELD__&delay_warning_time=4h&inet_interfaces_def=__USE_FREE_FIELD__&inet_interfaces=%24myhostname%2Clocalhost&ipc_idle_def=100s&ipc_timeout_def=3600s&mail_name_def=Postfix&mail_owner_def=postfix&mail_version_def=2.1.4&max_idle_def=100s&max_use_def=100&myhostname_def=__USE_FREE_FIELD__&myhostname=mail.vcstechnologies.com&mydomain_def=__USE_FREE_FIELD__&mydomain=vcstechnologies.com&mynetworks_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&mynetworks=&bounce_notice_recipient_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&bounce_notice_recipient=&2bounce_notice_recipient_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&2bounce_notice_recipient=&delay_notice_recipient_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&delay_notice_recipient=&error_notice_recipient_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&error_notice_recipient=&queue_directory_def=%2Fvar%2Fspool%2Fpostfix&process_id_directory_def=pid&recipient_delimiter_def=%2B&relocated_maps_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&relocated_maps=&sun_mailtool_compatibility_def=no&trigger_timeout_def=10s&content_filter_def=__DEFAULT_VALUE_IE_NOT_IN_CONFIG_FILE__&content_filter=:

Connection to host localhost is broken". I am only trying to tell it to use "Doamin Name" for outbound & inbound mail. When I send mail using the Webmin interface, compose somes up with "@mypc.mydomain.com" instead of just "@mydomain.com".

Problem #2: This one is worse than the first. I can't get any outside client to connect or authorize to server using Outlook Express on Windows or Ximian Evolution on Linux. I get error (very generic too), "Could not login to 'my email FQDN'. The server terminated the connection immediately"

What can I do guys? I tried modifying the main.cf and looking at changing the master.cf, but I really don't know what to cahnge. And what about this "email authentication" issue? I'm sure these are very simple solutions. I jsut can't see it right in front of my face. Thank you to all of you that assist me.

Did you hand edit the POSTFIX file that you are trying to manipulate via Webmin? or, did you forget some default settings? as the error msg indicates

Let's back up ... Did you have POSTFIX working prior to webmin issues?

Part 2, did you set the default to mypc.mydomain.com when you installed POSTFIX? cause that is what Webmin thinks.

I have been having Webmin issues since the server began. Some functions work, and some don't. It's not just one service or another that fails to save and apply changes. It's several server services that malfunction in Webmin to save. Of course, its always the same ones. At least its predictable.

Now to the subject at hand...The PC's name when it was installed (the entire server and all apps) was web1.mydomain.com. I am using Bind 9... for resolution from real world and internally. I have a record for mail.mydomain.com and resolving to external IP. My router is set to forward all pop and smtp traffic to internal server IP. I do not have a mail record for web1.mydomain.com in Bind. I have had to edit the main.cf & main.cf.default files manually because Webmin-Postfix will not allow me to save changes to "default". Postfix does see itself as web1.mydomain.com, that much I know. Should my servers name (or rather MUST my servers name) be mail.mydomain.com? If you would like, to see a copy of my default file, just let me know and I can email it to you in text.

Wait a minute. I remeber now, when I first setup the server, it had a different name than web1.mydomain.com. Than is when Postfix was installed. Chosen at setup. Thought that info might help.

If you want to have email in the wild then you will need an MX record in some DNS to get your mail to you.

Did you update your Apache VHost entyr for mail.mydomain.com to point to your 'new' ServerName?

I will admit that the PostFix install isn't my strong suit, but if you wanna email me your .cf file via private msg, I will be happy to give it a review.

Re WebMin: what version are you on? there are numerous bugs in older versions, if you are running prior to 1.50 you may want to upgrade. You can do that from webmin itself.

I do have an MX record for "domain name" with values "10 mail" and an A record for mail.domainname.com. I don't have anything for web1.mydomainname.com . Whenever I try to connect to mail with client, the connection is refused IMMEDIATELY!

About updating my Apache Vhost. Huh? I am running my website on the "default" site and I have directed the working directory to the content directory for my site. Should I setup a Vhost for my domain? Is that what you are meaning here? I have not setup any Vhost for mail.mydomain.com. By the way, does Postfix handle everything that I need for email on its own, or should I use something else too? Like fetchmail or something like that. Can you recommend a good opensource antivirus and anti spam for my server?

I would be greatful for your review on my .cf file. How am I going to get to your email address?

Webmin: I am running Version 1.150 on web1..........................com (Mandrakelinux 10.1). How do I update Webmin?

I'm sure you've figured it out by now. I'm really NEW to this Linux stuff. But, I love it. Down with Bill Fu#$@%#! Gates! LOLOL Thanks for your help frog.

For your MX record, I was just checking.
For your Apache, if your site is up and running you don't need to set up virtualhosts, I was only asking about that so that you could troubleshoot the POP3 web based login to email.
For AntiVirus and AntiSpam, look to CLAM and Spamassasin for linux
For Webmin Upgrade: Webmin tab | WebMin Config button | Upgrade WebMin button | it defaults to www.webmin.com for over the wire upgrade. Let them do the heavy lifting. current vers. is 1.17 if I recall correctly.
I sent you a PM for the email to send your file.

MadDog;

Check the relayhost in your config file
Quote:
relayhost =
it is blank

this site:: http://www.postfix.org/STANDARD_CONFIGURATION_README.html
the section Postfix on a local network, advises that you set relayhost = $mydomain
Also, it shows relayhost setup for use behind a firewall.

Check that site out and see if you agree...
