Change SMTP server

Hi:

On my server machine, I'm hosting my domain name. I'm also running qmail to act as my POP3/SMTP server. The only thing is, my ISP blocks SMTP servers if I send email to places like AOL, Road Runner, and other ISP's like that. Instead, they state to use their smtp servers. My question is, how can I change it so instead of running my smtp server, I use the SMTP server from my ISP? THanks for your help, I really appreciate it!!!!

Ken Cooper

This is just a setting in your particular email client.

Which program do you use to check your mail?

The problem you are having most likely is you need a PTR record AOL and other big ISPs will not except mail if you dont have one. anyway look for a setting that says "relay host"

juniperr is correct: look for a relay host setting, where you'll put the FQDN of your ISP's SMTP server (not the IP address). I don't know anything about QMail, but in Exchange, it's called a smart host. I'm sure there's something similar in QMail.

Here's the answer...

Edit the file /var/qmail/control/smtproutes

If it doesn't exist, create it.

Add the following line...

:FQDN

Where "FQDN" is the domain of your service provider. Also be sure to include the colon at the beginning.

This will forward all outgoing mail to servers on their network. It is also assumed that your ISP has permitted you relaying mail through their servers.

You don't need to restart qmail. It will begin using it immediately.
