Getting mail sent to $HOMEDIR/mail instead of $HOMEDIR

Hello to all,

I would like to know how I setup my mail servers so that mail get sent to a subfolder (eg. mail) within the home directories of users instead of simply insite their home directory.

I have Sendmail and hopefully soon Postfix.

Depends on which shell you're using. You need to change the mail path environment.

Well I most users use the bash shell.

There seem to be so many diff. answers to this question. I've seen responses such as recompile sendmail/postfix. Others say reconfigure procmail, now you're suggestiing to change the environmental variables.

What's the most thorough solution? Im not looking for an easy way out.

If mails are to be delivered to user's HOMEDIR then your mail server setup is not using a single-account mechanism. When that's the case, the mail path env var should be honored, at least for qmail.

if procmail (you just brought up in this thread) overrides it, then fix it in promail.

A recompile to sendmail/postfix, of course, is likely out of the possibility.

It's your server, you have physical access to it and I don't, why ask me?
