IIS V6 with SMTP and POP3.
IIS V6 with SMTP and POP3.
I have set it all up and can send e-mails and receive them via SMTP. As you probably know SMTP saves in coming messages in the Drop folder. I have also set up the POP3 part and this seems to work OK. As you also know this picks up messages in the users mailbox. So the million dollar question is, how do you get the massages from the Drop folder (of SMTP) to the mailbox folders (of POP3)? I feel a bit stupid asking, but damned if I can work it out! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Hi I have a similar problem - I am using IIS6 W2k3 smtp and pop3 but while I can send (via another working smtp) an email and see it in the drop directory (that seems to work ok) I cant connect at all to my pop or smtp server.
I have created a smtp/pop domain, created a mailbox - even turned off my firewall to check it, but I get this error when I try outlook express from the server - I actually dont know if you can connect a email client on the server to check the server without going out to the net (no loopback would stop this) - this is the error The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'thedomain.net', Server: thedomain.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E If I try from a workstation it just fails straight away if I try to use 'mail.thedomain.net' but if I send it via another smtp it delivers to the server smtp in the drop directory and thats where I'm stuck. I dont see any mail in my pop mailbox - even when its been delivered to the drop directory - its says 0 messages like AlanI but there is mail in the drop directory. I dont have loopback on my router so I dont really know if this is a problem just on my end. SilentRage checked out my DNS setup a few days ago and said everything checked out ok. I am back to frustrated and stressed. Would appreciate any help. Thanks ps I can telnet to other domains but to mail.mydomain.net it doesn't do anything...could this be dns related? Port 25, 110 seem to be open so my isp, dsl provider doesnt seem to be blocking them...could this just be my routers lack of lookback causing me grief?? arrrggghhh Last edited by zerat : April 1st, 2004 at 08:05 PM. |

Roarking: Your prob is not DNS or MX related as it is connecting to your SMTP service (it must do to get the Relay Denied error). It is because you have not set up the domain correctly on the SMTP server. You need to make sure anonymous access is on, and your domain is configured in the SMTP service. This way when the anonymous senders mail server (HoTMaiL, BTConnect.com etc) connects to your SMTP service, your SMTP service will receive ONLY e-mails addressed to a valid domain set up on your SMTP server. Otherwise people could use your SMTP server to relay junk mails to any destination.
You may want to tick the box that allows authenticated people to relay to any address, this will allow you to use it for sending out-going e-mails ONLY if you authenticate with a username and password. Zerat: You don't need any loop back stuff. It will resolve the domain name to an IP address (which will be its own) and then connect to it in the normal way regardless of if it is itself. You say is fails to connect to 'thedomain.net' you will have to specify the machine name, so I think you should have put 'mail.thedomain.net'. But regardless of those issues, as you say, how the bugger does the mail from the Drop directory find its way in to the POP3 mailboxes? HELP!!! |
