Hi... I have a static ip server from my ISP but I am using a dynamic host for my server which is provided by No-IP.com. I would like to setup a mail server on my server and I am thinking to choose IMail Server. May I know is it posible to setup the mail server with the dynamic host that I am using and what is the procedure? Thanx a lot in advance!

I am using the dynamic DNS service from no-ip to host my E-Mail server.
Make sure you are using a DNS HOST (A) and then you can install you E-Mail server software and configure you domain and users. I am using IA E-Mail server corp edition and it is brilliant and very very easy to setup |

Yes...and NO a) Choose a noip domain to be your mail domain, i.e. mailsever.noip.com b) Set the MX record for the domain to noip domain, i.e. myserver.noip.com in the DNS setting for the domain you will be using. c) Get the MAIL BACKUP from noip for $29.95 a year. This will spool your email if your ip changes or your server goes down (both of which WILL happen, trust me, I know from experience) d) You NOW set up your email server on the OS of your choice e) configure, implement & verify your email accts, i.e dude@mailserver.noip.com f) send and receive emails on your own server g) Don't get mad when you are blacklisted by spamhaus.org or you are 550'd from sending emails to @aol.com addresses This is because you are a small email server in a big pond ~ take it as a badge of honor that someone doesn't want to pipeline your emails. Finaly) Spend 6-9 months building, configuring and tweaking your server on a dynamic IP, then worry about migration to a static IP. hth...Frog

Could you please explain this ? Why does one get 550'd ? Just for having a dynamic ip ? Short of having a static ip, is there anything I can do having root access on a Red Hat Linux 9 qmail mail server to avoid the 550s ? Thanks for your help, --Sam |

You can't control this. 550 is the error msg returned by the AOL server letting you know that your IP is banned from sending mail to their users from your IP. The workaround for this is to use your ISP's MX server by passing mail from your server, to their server, to AOL. But, you may not want to do this as it negates the fun of running your own server and having your server roaming free. Also, if you place a large load of users on the ISP's mail servers they may frown upon your use of mail server on their network. This isn't because of anything that you've done. It is a reaction by AOL and other large ISP's, Go.com, to try to reduce spam. Unfortunately, we are the ones that are affected by this decision. Frog |

thanks for answering !
I did a test on my domain on openrbl and found it listed in 4 of 30 blacklists. From what I could tell, this is also because of my reverse dns mismatch. Do you think I'm getting the 550s just because the servers are doing a reverse dns lookup or because of these 4 blacklists ? --sam |

YES... If you are on a Dynamic IP then life is getting harder for you to run your own independant Mail Server. Check out www.spamhaus.com, they are blunt about it ~ If you are dynamic, DON'T ASK for removal from their list. < The kicker is that I use Spamhaus for my server, and they BL'd Me !...Doh > Sorry to say it, but you may have to use a reflector for your mail. I.e: www.no-ip.com, they offer a reflector for those that are blocked on port 25. But, you could use them to refect mail to your server. Caveat:: I'd email them and make sure THEY aren't BL'd before paying for such a service. hth...Frog |
