MS Exchange and Authenticated POP3 email
I have recently installed a server into out office, in place of the old peer to peer network.
The new machine is a Dell unit, and we had one of their engineers set the thing up for us. Unfortunately, we found that we had an incompatible broadband modem, and so the dell guy could not test the e-mail setup after he had programmed it in. Having now sorted out the modem problem, we find that we can receive e-mails, but cannot send any out. every time we try to send an e-mail, nothing happens at first, but after about 10 hours, we get an automated message back saying:- This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE. Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed. URL Then a couple of days later we get another automated e-mail back saying:- Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: subject Sent: 11/06/04 13:03 The following recipient(s) could not be reached: 'emailaddress@hotmail.com' on 11/06/04 13:18 This message was rejected due to the current administrative policy by the destination server. Please retry at a later time. If that fails, contact your system administrator. <ourdomainname.co.uk #4.3.2> I think it might be down to the fact that our remote pop3 e-mail server requires authentication. When we used outlook express, there was a check box to authenticate the e-mails. Now that we are on exchange server, I cannot find such a box to tick to authenticate our mail. Any suggestions anybody? Thanks Bryan |

Couple things to check
First check your DNS setup, your ISP will provide this.
Second you need to make sure your exchange server is configured correctly. If your email is hosted by someone other than your ISP, you may find they do not allow Mail forwarding. Also is it connected 24/7 and are you now hosting your own mail, do you have a registered domain, whoever holds the DNS records for your mail, need to get them redirected to your server if you have a domain with a dedicated IP. Hope this gives you a few ideas. Patolucas |

Also - Exchange cannot natively retrieve hosted POP3 emails from an ISP. You will need a third party add on such as Pytheas Mailgate (what we use) or POP2Exchange to retreive the Pop emails and get them into your exchage server and distributed to your outlook recipients.
