Postfix Performance

I am running a php application that is sending an array of messages to an internal Postfix server. The initial connection is very fast and the first three messages send without delay. Then every other message takes about six seconds and continues this behavior with any number of messages. I have tried this on two separate servers with the exact same results.

Has anyone experienced this and is there a solution to the pausing?

Thanks for your help,

Dave
