qmail emergency -- live server down -- losing money

hello all
i have a very serious problem. of of my co workers signed onto a machine that was the center of our mass virtual hosting and decided to reset all permissions and ownership on /home/vpopmail. i have reset the permissions to the proper user/group but we are still unable to send/recieve email on any of the domains on that machine. i'm using qmail + vpopmail. could this resetting of permissions/ownership have caused this? our email problems and trouble tickets came pouring in very shortly after that happened. any advice?

i fixed it. it was most definitely the permissions. 5000 emails piled up quickly, but that queue is shrinking as people are checking their mail.
