Red face send and recieve server on same box?

hey, i've been battling with this for a good long time now... i have hmail on our box, with the smtp/pop3 recieve mail working fine. but every time i try to send using port 25.... it wont work!

to elaborate, i've tried many other mailservers with the same problem. now if i change the smtp port to any other port (i used 465) i can send mail fine! but of course i cant receive it! i would have thought that if smtp worked on port 25 then surely it should work for sending *and* recieving??

so my question is this:
am i doing something wrong, or is it just not possible to have smtp send and smtp recieve on the same box using the same port? i did at one point use opmail to recieve (since it can only use port 25) and hmail to send (because it can be set to 465) but this is an ugly arrangement to be honest...

also if i cant use send and recieve on port 25 on the same box, is there a good, simple smtp only server that you know of that i can set to use another port?

thanks in advance

james

It sounds to me like your ISP is blocking certain ports. You may want to contact them and seek their help or advice. If you aren't sure, I would also check your terms of service before you call them. You may be not allowed to run a server on your account, and doing so will only get you into trouble, so be sure you are going by the rules before you call them and taddle on yourself.

the server is hosted in the globalswitch telehousing in london, so i'm certainly allowed to do it and the ports certainly aren't blocked! thanks for the suggestion though.

Im getting a similar thing on Server 2003. There is a post asking exactly the same question but I'm trying to get hold of Trellis as he fix the problem but forgot to mention how he did it....
