I've changed the sendmail configuration to relay via an IP address. The machine can no longer send email directly.

Well... that's why sendmail won't relay, that's the problem. I've tried editing my /etc/hosts file to give the IP address an alias, but it didn't help.

Why would the IP address and hostname the machine help? It's behind a firewall so wouldn't help you, would it?
If you think the hostname or IP address will help, I'll post them.
