set up mail server in win xp

Hi peoples
I am running win xp. I have apache 1.3.28 running my website. I also have PHP and activeperl installed. Now I want to set up a mail server. I'm no expert so I need something not too difficult to set up. I just need an smtp server so my cgi scripts can send email (i know of sites that u can use their server, like smtp.com, but i'd rather run my own in case those sites ever go down or go out of business). I think I'd also need pop3 access to those accounts since I dont want to have to create a whole email interface. I will probably be setting up multiple websites on this machine, so I'm not sure how the email would work (i barely understand anything about how the messages are stored, etc. but i figure i will learn as i go, or i can find tutorials when i actually know a program to use). So long post short: Does anyone know a good FREE (i dont really have money too invest right now) smtp/pop3 server program that will run under apache or win xp (I'm not even sure if they run independently or email would be set up as part of apache?
i dont understand email that well but thats probably because most websites set up email under linux

p.s. like i said im my own host, so don't give answers like "ask your hosting company about..." (sorry if i sound evil but too many ppl answer my questions like that) and i also have no domain name set up, i just run it from my ip address (which sadly is dynamic-stupid dsl company, so now i will have to figure out dns, leave any tips if u wanna help)
oh ya - its win xp home edition, not pro (so no IIS or other windows web server utilities that come on pro edition)

well thx for reading
u can stop reading now
i mean it.
fine since ur still reading-thx for any help u can give me, i just hope i can do this

I posted this in another thread asking a similar question.

http://www.stalker.com/cpro/default.html

Communigate pro is free for private use and is available for nearly all operating systems there are. It does mail, webmail, websites, FTP, and about a hundred other things. Good documentation and is VERY stable. Good Luck.

Send a message via MSN to polarunion
this was MADE for you...

www.concept4.ca/diy

it's a manual on how to install hmailserver on windows. it's easy, it's powerful, and unlike a lot of other suggestions that people have, it's all open source.

enjoy!
