Usernames with 'dot' in them

I'm hitting a snag. Running sendmail and doing forwarding. I have one user with an address like

john.doe@somedomain.com

His virtusertable alias is like

john@localdomainname.com john.doe@somedomain.com

And it seems that sendmail can't even find that user to do the forwarding, even though the rest of the forwarding works to that domain.

So, is the 'dot' in the username causing this to crash?
