ASUS A8V Deluxe

Hello! I have been searching threw many forums and I just cant piece togethor everything I need to know.

- I bought an ASUS A8V Deluxe and expieranced the heart ache I think many people before me have felt. Spend lots of money so the stupid green light will light up and you push the power button and nothing happens.. *tear*

Here is some info:

Asus A8V Deluxe mobo ver 1.02
4 DIMM Ultra 333mhz 512 sticks
Chaintec 256 AGP video card
AMD 64 3500+ (not sure whether it is 90 or 130nm) Just bought it about a week ago (30DEC04).
400 Watt ATX Power supply
BIOS says ver 1007

My problem I suppose is that I have never built a computer from scratch before. All I have ever done was swap memory or install new video cards.

1. First problem I encountered... Was that When installing the CPU chip into the mother board I was sure to orientate it the correct way and apply the thermal compound, but when I was putting on the fan, it was really really hard to get on. I had to force it to lock down on both sides, then there is a lever that is really hard to turn before it locks down.. Well I got it locked down finally..

2. Second problem.. :-( when connecting the ATX power cabels to the accesories and case (fans.. case lights.. etc) I noticed that it was really hard to connect them cause the metal connectors inside the power connectors were getting all bent and stuff. I straightened them out and finally got the damn things to connect properly.

3. Third Problem.. (I suppose I shouldnt be building computers) I connect everything plug in the case stuff like the reset switch power sw and the other thing as well as the case speaker thing.. turned the ATX power supply on, the green light turns on.. push the power button and nothing. no lights, no fans moving, no beeps, no video, no post. But the green light is on! wow that sure is a pretty green light! heh

Anyways..

4. Problem number 4.. (yeah it gets worse) Call ASUS technical staff, they cant help me, so they send me an email about troubleshooting a No POST/No VIDEO problem.. All it does is have you remove the mobo from the case (for grounding troubleshooting) didnt work, has you remove various components to try to induce a POST error, didnt work. So at the bottom of the email it says contact the RMA department for an exchange.. well I live in germany, and the people in the states couldnt help me, called the german number and got some lady that didnt know what I was talking about.

After reading threw all that I feel bad for asking you guys if someone could help me, cause you probably already spent 30 mins of your day reading this horror story.

I feel like I would rather make this motherboard work then try to exchange it or risk buying a brand new one and have this happen again.. If someone with more expierance could help me out a little..

Did I mess up by putting the fan on, was it suppose to be that difficult to install?

Maybe the PSU is bad cause of those connectors? But remember I took the mother board completely out of the case and only had the 12 pin and 4 pin connected trying to troubleshoot the problem.. Maybe it is the 4 pin connector?

geeze I dunno, my brain hurts. I hope someone could spread some light and hope into this matter...

I want to thank everyone in advance for reading this or putting forth any knowledge you have that might help.. Dont be affraid to ask the pertinent questions like did I switch the PSU on!! cause some of the simplest things can get us sometimes...

P.S. I did switch it on!!!

thanks again

[you won't be able to know if you damaged your CPU or not unless/until you can get into POST somehow... then the beeps or POST reporter, etc. can tell you, etc. For now, lets assume you didn't, because installing heatsinks does take more "force" than one would think. On mine I didn't use AMDs retail heatsink, I am using a Zalman 7000 CU instead - it is cooler/quieter from previous build experience)...]

I straightened them out and finally got the damn things to connect properly.

[Ya gotta be careful when plugging in 4 pin Molex's; they do bend, etc... If you have a VoltOhmMeter (VOM), you can test the circuits you've made - WITH NO POWER ON AND THE POWER CORD UNPLUGGED! - to see if your "fix" has continuity...]

3. Third Problem.. [OK, this is virtually almost always due to mis-wiring your System Panel Connector. You don't specify your case, so can't offer specific advice, but only general:
1) I always make sure that the pinouts of any multi-pin connector MATCH the pinout diagram of the MOBO; go to the website of your case manufacturer and get the specifications (in the manual should be!) of the pinouts (e.g. where +5v, switch, LED +/-, etc... are located). Then VERIFY that the pinouts of the connector MATCH the diagram for the A8V (page 31 in my manual)
2) In my cases (both builds), my cases had individual pins/leads, so I had to fit each one separately, when you do this - one pin at a time - the direction the words face is inconsequential/doesn't matter.

3) after you've done the above, then give it a go. If it still doesn't work, then you've either got a bad PSU, or potentially a bad mobo. Before making the "bad mobo" decision, you should reset the Real-time clock/CMOS by removing the battery and doing the "reset jumper thing" - documented well in the ASUS manual.

You can test your Power supply (carefully) with your VOM. If you don't have a VOM, you shouldn't be building electrical stuff (IMHO).

Anyways..
<SNIP>

I feel like I would rather make this motherboard work then try to exchange it or risk buying a brand new one and have this happen again.. If someone with more expierance could help me out a little..

[Don't return it and get another until you can work through these issues. Get comfortable resetting your RTC, flashing BIOS, and measuring things with a VOM. Also, do yourself a BIG favor, and get a good, BIG power supply from a reputable manufacturer. I have had excellent results on my systems with Antec; but I'd get something 430W or larger... IMO 300W isn't enough - virtually ever...]

Now for MY question!

I have the ASUS A8V Deluxe, Socket 939 3800+, MAXTOR SATA 300GB, ATI AIW9800+, 1GB (2x512MB) Kingston HyperX3500, and a Sony DRU710A DVD/CD. (Plus floppy, natch!). Thermaltake Tsunami Case and Antec NeoCool 480PSU...

All hooked up, POSTS just fine thank you, the BIOS "Sees" all my devices, etc... the problem is that I can't seem to get the BOOT sequence to see the HD so that I can install Windows on it. All the ASUS information is about installing F6 drivers for SATA RAID. But I don't WANT RAID! I just want the one SATA disk as my boot disk. The drivers on ASUS CD (both VIA and Promise Drivers) are both ONLY for RAID! There is one small comment at the very end of the VIA user guide that says quite simply "you can also use SATA as individual disk"... but NO DRIVERS!!! and Windows can't see it. I'm pretty sure that loading RAID drivers isn't the right thing to do (from previous system build experience!)

Any thoughts? I really don't want to have to put another disk (IDE) into this puppy to install windows on it!

TIA

Success!

Follow up for ASUS A8V folk:

Just go ahead and load the "RAID" drivers via F6 (even if you aren't doing SATA RAID)... worked fine and I'm online with new system now...

Note to ASUS: write better documentation!

**UPDATE**

Turns out that I have a bad power supply (go figure). I went ahead and installed my old 250w power supply from my old computer and the mobo posts. I can access the BIOS and start to load windows, but when it starts to load then it just seems to reboot and go back to the first POST screen and go threw it all again..

Any Ideas? My BIOS version is 1008, yet I do not have another computer with a floppy drive so I have not yet updated my BIOS with the ver 1009 yet.. Will the update in BIOS ver to 1009 solve my problem, or is this something else?

Thanks!

My hard drive is set to slave, and the bios detects it, what is your hard drive set to? (In regards to the non-detecting raid drive question)...

Again, in my opinion a 250W power supply, even if proven good is NOWHERE near enough power quantity/quality. I got my build working with BIOS 1008, so that is definitely NOT your problem... you don't say where in the Windows setup it reboots you... has it already loaded all the files? if so, then what you have to do during that next POST that Windows setup will force - is hit your <DEL> key to force back into BIOS, and at that point change the boot priority to boot off HARD disk first, and CD second... otherwise you'll just contually cycle through POST, boot, windows install, and repeat... - I learned this - obvious in hindsight - issue/solution during my first build a year ago...

Again, though, do yourself a favor and spend the $75-100 to get a high power, quality power supply... nobody needs this aggravation! And I guarantee you that 250W aint enough for a Socket 939 MOBO system (nor any Pentium IV system either for that matter).

Regards and good luck

*** Another UPDATE***

So I called some tech people with ASUS.. (they are beginning to know me by my name.. LOL J/K) anyways, turns out that because I had Windows XP on my hard drive that I had in my OLD computer that broke, When I tried to put it with a different chipset, it just doesn’t work. I thought that XP would auto re-config but it doesn’t.. So I formatted the hard drive and started from scratch, and finally got into windows.. This mobo/cpu combo is a beast! Already tried it on a few online games.. All I can say is WOW.. This thing rocks!

To follow up on the PSU issue for TheWags, I know that the PSU is in now where near capacity to run everything so as it is now, I am only running one 512k stick of ram and the cpu fan and one case fan.. I ordered a new 550 w PSU should be here Monday, so I can finally install 3 more 512k sticks of ram, and 7 more fans, along with all the peripherals and what not.. But good insight, 250w is in no way good enough for this mobo, it was the last ditch effort to get the stupid thing to post and boot up..

Glad to hear you got it working , and that you're gonna upgrade the PS - I know all too well about PS "failover"... so I keep an extra 400+ Watter on hand! I didn't know you were trying to re-use a previously installed copy of Windows/Hard drive combo!... could have save you a ton of hassles.

I am very pleased with the speed of my combo, just ran 3DM03 on it, default is 5992 (!) - which is fast (for me), since I don't play any FPS games, etc...

now onwards to getting where I can install XP MCE2005!!!
(turns out my ATI AIW 9800 Pro is *not* compatible! No drivers for it ...

Regards

sounds like it may not be booting from CD-rom, or there may be something wrong with the CD.

SATA Installation

After trying all night to do it on my own, I still can't seem to get windows to see my drive. Though what seems to be the problem is when the windows installation comes up and it says to press F6 for the raid drivers, it actually does nothing, and will continue on to the installation. It will then say it can't see any mass storage device, and will ask if i have a floppy. I say yes, put it in, press enter but nothing happens.

Could this be a problem with my floppy drive? I noticed the green light never turns off..ever, and also the ribon cable that came with the a8v right near the end some of the ribbon in the middle is twisted? so its not really a straight ribbon.

Could that be the problem? It does see the floppy drive in the bios though.

NO the floppy isn't need to XP. CHeck around in your BIOS. I know that some motherboards you have to tell it to check teh SATA for HD's. I forget what it is under, but if you look around you'll find it.
