ASUS A8V-Deluxe, anyone remember it?
Hi all. Need some help. My son wants to try some Win98 games. I figured it would be a lot easier to put together another computer with just Win98 on it instead of screwing up his current computer trying to use Windows compatability mode.
This is what I have,
Asus A8V-Deluxe motherboard
AMD A64 3000+
1 gig (2x512)ram
6800GT
onboard audio (for now)
120G H.D. Pata
Teac CD burner
H.D. set as Primary master
Burner set as Secondary Master
I got Win98SE installed yesterday. I installed the chipset drivers that came with the motherboard CD. After re-booting, I lost the burner. The Bios see's it but not Win98. No "D" drive. I remembered you had to manually change something to get the Secondaries to work. So after puttering around, I found in Device Manager, under IDE controllers, it showed Primary controller, secondary controller, and Via ide controller. The Via controller gives you the option of Primary controller, Secondary controller or both. I changed it to both. After re-booting it still doesn't work. so for the heck of it, I put the H.D. on the Secondary as master and the burner on the Secondary as slave. Now it works. Stupid, but it works.
Am I missing something somewhere? I will try this again tonight. Mabe at least switching to the Primary. If worst come to worst and I have to leave this as Master/Slave on the same channel, what the downside to this? I don't remember other than it always being said that you never put a CD device on the same controller as a H.D.
Thanks for any help.
