Board that won't boot but will power on
I have seen a couple of posts in here regarding a motherboard that will power up (fans turn, etc) but will not boot up. I have followed all the suggestions but I still have the problem. Essentially when I turn on the power the system fan and the video fan will start and continue running for as long as I have power applied, but the system will not boot up. There is nothing on the monitor and I do not hear any drive activity.

Here is what I have tried
1. It happens on two different boards, MSI and 1stMainboard
2. I have tried two different processors (XP1800 and 1900), neither will work, but both will work when placed in another working system
3. I have tried two different video cards, ATI and NVIDIA
4. I have cleard CMOS multiple times
5. I have tried different memory and different memory configurations. The memory works in another system
6. I have stripped the systems to the video card, memory and a floppy
7. I have tried two different power supplies ( a new 400W and an existing/working 350W)
8. I have tried taking the board out of the case and laying it on a foam padding.
9. I have tried taking the components (processor, video and memory from a working system and put them on the non working systems (both of them)
10. Both systems have XP rated cooling fans

The MSI board was working just fine until I put in the other processor. The only thing changed was the processor (from a 2100 to a 1900. I no longer have the old processor to put back into it.

Any clues or suggestions ?

Question same problem
hello i have the same problem i just bought a chaintech 7kjd board and i am installing the thing i found out is im not getting power to my agp and pci slots. if anyone has any information please let us know thanks

Did you look for special jumpers on the motherboard? Sometimes motherboards have jumpers for:

CPU Type and Speed

Other stuff

I've found the defaults a little wacked at times.

Give that a shot.

Humm....How about the cpu/heat sink combo? Does it have sufficient thermal paste applied or is this a non-issue (sorry, not familiar with this style of MB).

I Tried 3 different AMD brand heat sinks. Besides, if that were an issue then it should boot and work untill the processor got to hot and then shut down.

I have not heard of a processor not working at all because of a bad heat sink, but then ?????????????

i have seen the strangest things, it is impossible to list everything in a forum, so i will be brief.
i have seen keyboards, mouse, fans, wall sockets(ac recepticles) not providing enough power, monitors, case fasteners in the wrong place. in fact anything that hooks to a computer could possibly cause a problem. what has been constant in this problem, that you wouldnt normally think of? if you used the same keyboard, mouse......

AMD Support
Hey,

Spoke to an AMD guy today. He said disconnect everything and try hooking an external speaker up to get any kind of beep code (I'm going to do that tonight with my finiky one).
Also, some older vid cards have a voltage compliancy issue - something about .8.

If no go, then probably a bad board - even though it powers up. Check your warranty and good luck (mine's still under warranty .
