Computer Won't Post
Hi all,
My computer is refusing to post - all the fans are running at full speed, but it refuses to make the post beep. Occasionally, when I tweak the RAM and cdrom just right and disconnect the HD, it boots from the CD-Rom, but naturally, I can't install windows without my hard drive. I've tried using different PSU's, using different RAM and separately disconnecting the IDE peripherals... I also get beep codes that aren't recognized by Award (they're closest to the bad video memory/card code), but only occasionally. It's all happened since I flashed the (Award) BIOS - the guy I got it from said it needed that, but it was working pretty good before that. The mobo is a Transcend TS-ASL3. If you guys'll help me figure this one out, I'd really appreciate that. ![]() |

Hi RuralGeek and welcome to Dev Shed.
Have you been able to do anything at all since you flashed your BIOS ? If not, and the BIOS flash has failed, you are in a lot of trouble as BIOS chips can't be easily replaced and in most cases, you need to purchase a new motherboard.

Every so often, I can get it to post if only the CD-ROM drive is connected and I have tweaked with the RAM a little, but it isn't consistent.

Has this been the case since you attempted to flash your BIOS ?

Yes it has been since I flashed the BIOS... However, afterwards I was able to boot from CD-ROM, and proceeded to install windows on my hardrive. The computer suddenly turned off in the middle of the installation process and hasn't started up again - very weird!

I think in this case, your mobo is dead due to a failed update of the BIOS.

It *was* a great motherboard... 64megs built-in AGP video ram, etc. How do I avoid this in the future? I followed the instructions to a tee, so I'm not sure what went wrong.

There are different causes really. Did you use the correct BIOS upgrade ?

aitken325i: Yes, Transcend said that it was the right BIOS upgrade to use.
tj_nt: That's pretty good! I usually find them for about $80 - pretty steep for me. |
