Dell 5100 with RTC Errors
When I started my computer today it came up with a blue message saying that the computer could not boot because a file was missing or damaged. I am not sure of the file name but it was something to the effect of windows/system32/........ When I called India to find out what my problem was they ran me through some diagnostic tests from a menu that pops up when f12 is repeatedly pressed when the system is first booting. From running the diagnostic tests, number five on the menu, I had 13 failures:
1)RTC Functionality Test-Fail Error Code: 1000-0233 2)Timer Functionality Test-Fail Error Code: 1000-0222 3)Timer Functionality Test-Fail Error Code: 1000-0224-This code failed a total of 11 times before moving to the next part of the test I had looked on the net for some ideas, and I thought that it might be the battery on the motherboard. If you have any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ![]() |

Hi Redwings51 and welcome to Dev Shed.
Have you tried replacing the CMOS battery ?? I'd give that a try first. Do you still have your XP disk ?

No certain order in which to do it, although you may wish to go into your BIOS and note down any settings that you wish to remember.
What tests did the MS tech support have you do ? I'd hate for you to open up the machine and replace the CMOS battey when a repair installation of Windows could solve the problem. |

Dell had me run the diagnostics (F12) program. Then the Dell guy said I needed a new motherboard?? |

I'd be a bit hesitant to replace a motherboard on the say-so of support at Dell without exploring other avenues first !
Have you tried to boot from the XP disk to do a repair install ? Or, even use Knoppix to see if the machine can be used that way - if you can get it booted then I think we can assume that the mobo isn't fried. |
