Dell Dimension 4400 -- No Signal to Moniter -- Added RAM?
One of my friends told me to fix his Dell Dimension 4400, saying his little brother tried to install more RAM for him, but then he couldn't boot his computer up. I took it for a look at it, and the moniter is somehow not getting a signal, and I'm not getting any POST. It's not the video card (I swapped with a video card that worked, and it still wouldn't boot up,) it's not the RAM (I replaced the RAM with 256mb of compatible RAM [pc2100] and got 3 POST beeps..so I switch back to the 128mb of RAM that was in there before and it seemed happy,) and I doubt it's the processor, as he didn't touch it, and I made sure it was installed properly (it was.) What do you guys think is wrong? What should I check?

Does the machine even try and boot ? Try removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes before replacing and then trying to boot again.

Still nothing. Yeah, it's trying to. I hear the fans and everything spinning. The dell diagnostic on the back of the computer is A-green, B-green, C-green, and D-yellow. Which is sadly uninformative (Dell refers to this problem as "other.")

Can you get into the BIOS ? Does the machine reach POST ?
Try removing and then re-seating every component. It could be that when the 'little brother' was trying to upgrade he has knocked another component. Although, it could be a failed CPU or mobo. If his 'little brother' started touching things inside the case without properly discharging static from himself, he could have fried something. |

I plugged his processor, ram, and video card into a different motherboard/psu, and it worked fine. You guys are right, I think he fried his mobo. Thanks for your help

Try the components again in another machine to ensure that everything works to ensure that nothing has fried during this latest change.

I tested all of the components in a different mobo -- psu, gpu, processor, ram -- and it booted up, and I got the moniter to display something. Though, something interesting happened. I'm not getting any diagnostic lights anymore (new and old dell mobo,) and when I take all ram out, or put ram in that usually gave me POST errors, I get nothing (just old mobo.) Any ideas?
