Dell Inspiron 5100 Motherboard P/N replacement

Hi! I have a Inspiron 5100 laptop that I got from a friend of mine that has a bad m/b. He said a sequence of lights flashed a code and that code was for the motherboard. I do not have that sequence as this was a while ago. I have heard when replacing the m/b you have to replace it with the exact same one. I noticed that there are a few m/b part numbers for the 5100. I did briefly look on the bottom of the laptop to find a number that looked alike but could not find one. Is that number on the m/b directly? Will matching up P/N's be sufficient in getting a new board?

Thanks for the help!
-Joe

Notebooks can be particularly specifically designed around a certain board. You'll find the model number of the board on the board itself (although a system information utility may be able to find its part number as well). You'll probably want to find a board of the exact same model and revision numbers to avoid incompatibilities.
