Did i fry my motherboard?
i have a dell celeron laptop and my friend gave me his dell p4 laptop with a broken lcd screen.
i transplanted screens and everything worked ok. however the battery ran out. the problem was that the AC/DC power adapter had a broken plug (the wire was stripped out). i soldered things back together and i thought it was all so simple, but when i plugged the power adapter in nothing happened except a few blinking lights. i didnt see any smoke or smell anything burnt, but im kinda scared now. is there any type of fuse or anything like that in the laptop to prevent idiots like me from frying our computers? |

I don't think your laptop is messed up... maybe its just the power cord you tried to fix... what blinking lights are you talking about?

there are three lights at the base of the laptop. there is a power light, a hard drive light, and what looks to be a battery light.
i think the power and the battery light are blinking. how can i check to see if my board is toast? i took apart my laptop again and i didnt see anything weird...what should i look for? |

Is it possible you got the wires backwards when you soldered them back together? That would cause weird things to happen, but most appliances are designed to protect the electronics from reverse-polarity input, so you may just have to repair the adapter and be good to go.

There's not really a way you can check that by yourself unless you got spare parts lying around. If something fried, it could be anything (even though the motherboard was most likely.) So you'd have to swap parts and stuff and check if it works after replacing everything etc... It's just not something you can do by yourself.

Huh... thought I had fixed that already... that's what I get for zooming through spellcheck without reading what the replacement value is... Anyway, look in your local phone listing for a notbook repair specialist... they're more likely able to help you than joe computer guy around the corner. |

True. Even though a professional place is more expensive than very small computer shops you should ALWAYS send a laptop to a big place unless you actually bought it in that small place. The small shop might not have the equiptment or all the compatible spare parts to troubleshoot your laptop. Just I wouldnt't recommend sending it to the actual manufacturer though... too expnsive and too long.
