What do you mean will your motherboard support it ? If you mean will you be able to burn DVD's, then yes, you will be able to. You will need to install it properly and purchase burning software too.

Depending on how it works, you may need to update the firmware for the drive but of you purchase a reputable drive then it should be ok.

When we want to upgrade processor or RAM in older motherboard, it(motherboard) does not support the latest processor or RAM. So I want to know whether these kinds of things also apply on DVD writer

No. Drives aren't the same as onboard components. Drives are generally supported. It just depends on the software you're using as to whether or not the drive is fully compatible. For example, an older version of Nero (a widely used burning program), may not support a new dvd burner.

But dvd burners, generally come with a burning software that will be compatible.

It means I should not worry in buying DVD writer in relation with its compitablilty with motherboard.
Can u give me the examples of on-board and integrated devices. What kind of device DVD writer is?(on-board or any other, it cant be integrated I know)

A dvd burner is not an integrated nor an onboard device. It's a drive. Drives are plugged into the motherboard via cable (IDE, SATA, etc). A DVD burner is just considered hardware, and nothing more.

Onboard devices can be anything such as video card, sound card, memory, processor, etc. These types of devices may be limited as far as compatibility issues with your motherboard. For example:
Memory may only be supported up to PC3200 DDR
Video cards may be supported up to 8x AGP
Sound cards may be supported as just a PCI

So, if you purchased a PC3700 DDR memory module, it wouldnt be fully compatible. If you purchased PCI-Express Video and sound cards, then it may not be supported if you dont have PCI-E slots on your motherboard.

Bottom line... read the manual (or online documentation) for your motherboard. It will tell you what the specs are, and from there you can determine what you can and can't use on it.
