My eMachines T3256 motherboard just got fried. The replacement from emachines is $160.00. Does anybody out there know of a less expensive motherboard that can be used as a replacement? Also, will I have to purchase a new license of XP if I use another motherboard?

If you still have the lisence key for windows xp then you should be able to re-use it with different hardware. I think that microsoft allow you to install XP with the same key at least 3 times on different machines (for people in your situation, or people who upgrade a lot).
As for the mothorboard i am not sure, you would have to shop around for prices I guess. |

What processor do you wish to use with it ? What kind of RAM and graphics card are you using ? You don't need to use the mobo that e-machines specify.
As for XP, as long as you have the licence key it will be fine. You may have to call Microsoft, but as long as you have the key handy it's a painless phone call.

FWIW, I have replaced the mobo on several e-machines using run of the mill mobo/cpu combos...
Take note that there are possibly two mounting nodes on the case itself that must be flattened out to prevent shorting or damaging it the new board...in all the mods I have done to e-machines there has always been enough standard (location) mounts to install 3rd party mobos without a problem other than the non conventional nodes I mentioned... you might look at the mobo/cpu combos available from tigerdirect.com...I've have had good luck with them. |
