ERROR--anyone online now for quick direction if not here...

Hi. Wow. I've been through a lot trying to figure out how to fix this. My computer has been very reliable for over 7 years, then this.... If anyone is online now, and can direct me to another forum (if not this one) which can help out..........
I'll fist give the ERROR msg DETAILS, then I'll list what I've done.

...NO IDEA....
I don't know a heck of a lot when it comes to fixing computer problems. Basically, I freak out and try anything. Here's what happened and what I've done.

----------All booted up alright, up to when the desktop appeared. All icons appeared as usual, but the ERROR prompt came up, rendering all unclickable except for the error prompt. When clicked, the desktop appeared to refresh for an instant, but a second later the ERROR came up again.
----------After clicking it about a hundred times, I noticed in the split second when the thing was refreshing, I could actually click on something. But only for a second..., and then there would be the Hourglass, and then I'd click the ERROR to proceed for another split second..ad inf..until I finally managed to get find my configuration control panel to enable a diagnostic start up. So I succeded in doing that and going onto safe mode.
-----------In safe mode I tried numerous things. Going out of safe mode continued to show the stupid ERROR. What I decided to do was get rid of IE 6 and reinstall IE 5.5. It worked! I'm out of Safe Mode and now able to get on the internet -- could not get online in safe mode.
-----------What I THINK it is, is the IE 6. I dowloaded this and that and the other IE and tried to upgrade from the 5.5. I downloaded IE 6.0 again, got rid of the old one, and tried to install it. Installation was a success, but the ERROR was there to laugh in my face. Had to do the SAME process to get back here again.... Wow.
------------I tried the IE 6.1 with the Patch thing..., but could not do it because I needed 6.0 installed. Hopeless.
------------I ran the scandisk a few times with no problem, but when trying to run the Defrag, it would give up saying there could be a currupt file somewhere and to run scandisk again. Grrr.

..........So, with my limited knowledge I take refuge here in hopes someone can give me a step-by-step.... I've been creating sites for some years and have just moved back home, with many ideas and ready to rip, but all in 5.5 is one GIANT 16-color nightmare.
pleasepleasepleeeeeease help! I love my computer...-- the big glass screen that weighs a ton, the perfect keyboard with heavy, ivory-like keys. The Brain now with a bug after all this time..., big bummah. I have VERY little money, you see. So much info inside -- many cool programs that won't fit on disk. So, I'm freakin a bit. Alright, I'll shut up now. Whaaaaat's uuuuuup, Docs?!

Calm down!

First scan for a virus with recenctly updated antivirus software, run adaware and spybot. Then see if this helps: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249191
