Angry GA-7ZMMH Motherboard help!

I just bought a new Gigabyite GA-7ZMMH mobo. I bought a AMD 2400+ CPU and I put it in running a 266FSB and the CPU was making funny noises then the computer turned off. When I took it back out it smelled realy bad and it was warm. It only ran for 5 seconds. I read a forum on this mobo and it said it could be the RAM. I have two 256 PC100 SDRAM from PNY. Could that be the problem? Is this a just a bad CPU or mobo?

You mean the cpu was warm? Did you have the heatsink attached properly, and did the heatsink fan turn on?
Sounds kinda like the cpu overheated and fried.

Ok, from the beginning: what was hot when the computer turned off? Check your power supply, be sure you don't have it set on 220V instead of 110V. Do you know if the cpu fan turned on when you started it up, and that the heatsink made good contact with the cpu?
If the cpu was hot and the computer died, sounds like the cpu fried. What exactly did you read about the ram?

Exclamation Reply: GA-7ZMMH Motherboard help!

The only thing that was warm was the CPU the power supply was on 110V the CPU fan turned on the heatsink made good contact because it was warm to. This is what I read about the ram at http://forums.devshed.com/showthread.php?t=144976
Hope that helps. I also have my own forum at
www.amoeller.ownsthis.com at the bottom of the page.

I don't think that this sounds like the situation described in the other thread, but do be sure you have the right ram and jumper settings. Try the cpu in another computer if you can, I think its fried and you'll need a new one to continue.

Unhappy Reply: GA-7ZMMH Motherboard help!

I had made sure the jumpers were set right and I even called up Gigabyte before the CPU came in the mail about the RAM and they said it would work. After the CPU died I called Gigabyte for help. They said the CPU was bad or the board more likely the CPU because of the smells, sounds, and warmth.

This board is NOTORIOUS for a bad CPU fan connection!
I have two of these that did just that! The fan connector for the cpu just doesnt work and the heat sink fan cuts off.

Use one of the alternate cooling fan connectors on the board for the cpu fan.
this is a defect of these boards.

Chances are your cpu isnt damaged too bad and still may work.
I ran my nephews cpu an athlon 1.3 ghz for 5 minutes before I noticed the "overcooked" smell. It still ran fine after I switched connectors.
Just don't connect the fan to the cpu fan connector again. use one of the on board case fan connectors.

You can also use a heat sink fan that connects directly to the periphral connectors from the power supply.

check RAM clock

I notice you mentioned PC100 ram, but a 266 fsb processor.
Unless you are running the RAM asynchronously, this could
easily be your problem. You may also need to flash the
bios to support your processor and I think it would be wise
to heed the warning of one of the other replies which says
there could be a problem with the cpu fan connector on
these boards...good luck
