Is it the motherboard?
I have a 3 year old Dell I5100 that has always had the typical shutdown issues. Monday it shutdown ( overheat) only now when I try to turn it back on it powers up for about 2 seconds then shuts down.. the fans /heat sink are all clean.. is my motherboard fried?

Try clearing your CMOS and see if it manges to POST.

Since you have a Dell you might have a hard time with this part. You need to find the BIOS Setting jumper on the motherboard, put it into its clearing position, and then back. If there is someplace you can get a layout of your motherboard, from Dell's website or a manual, then you can try that. You will need the product number off the case I believe.
I always thought that removing the battery would clear the CMOS, but everytime I mention that people yell at me. ![]()

I removed my RAM and reseated it one at a time..with my 128 out it goes thru the on processes further then still shuts down.. but it does get further into it.. weird.
