MB Bios Update Failed
After trying to update the Bios the computer will not reboot. How can do you get back to the default bios? I believe the wrong bios update was used.
Tried: Cleared CMOS Unpluged PSU and MB battery for 20 minutes. Hardware: MB- Gigabyte - GA-K8U CPU - Socket 754 AMD Athlon 64 - 3000 BIOS - Award OS - XP Pro

Sorry, but you need a working BIOS to even get to the point of flashing it. You might need to replace the actual chip on the motherboard in which the BIOS is stored with one containing a working BIOS.
But, I just done a quick google search and I have found a program called Recovery BIOS - it might be useful but I have never used it. Although, what happens when you try to boot incase this is another problem ? Last edited by aitken325i : March 19th, 2006 at 05:08 AM. Reason: Spelling |

Based off the pictures I can find online of your board, I see that your bios chip is removable (I've actually seen quite a few with the chip soldered right to the board in some prebuilt systems). If the recovery bios program doesn't work, you still have a few options for reviving your BIOS. You can do a google search for the hot swap bios flashing technique. This is best done if you or someone you know has the same board as you. If no one has a similar board, this can still be done but the other working board must use the same type of bios chip (ie. it uses the same chip type and number of pins). Lastly, if you don't feel like risking another MB in the process, try badflash.com You supply the info and they'll mail you a new chip with the bios version you tell them to program on it. All you need is a PLCC extractor set (from Radio Shack for about $10) to easily remove your BIOS chip. You can do it yourself but this tool makes it loads easier. I've gone through this site for a new chip myself and found that the guy seems very open to helping the customers (at least in the confirmation email it seemed that way). The new programmed chips will run you $25 including s/h. Good luck on reviving your system.

aitken325i,
Thanks for your reply. I was afraid that was going to be the case. I looked at recoverybios.com that appears to only be a service. It would probably be cheaper to buy a new MB. Rather than sending it off halfway around the world. It is not my system, and it is my understanding that it is just dead in the water. No signs of life. The price you pay to try new things. Again, Thank You. Clarification: Not only is someone else's system. I am just trying to help them. Last edited by ewish : March 19th, 2006 at 04:39 PM. Reason: clarification |
