Motherboard's on but nothing else is.
Turned on my PC this morning, played about a bit, and suddenly my monitor lost the signal from my PC. The PC power light was still on. I tried to reset, but it wouldnt. So I turned off the power at the wall and the power light took a few seconds to dim. Hit the power switch a few times and nothing happened.
So I opened it up and there was a lot of dust in there. So I cleaned it all out with a vacuumm with a thin nozzle attached. Got most if not all the dust and hooked it up again but its still not turning on. The green light on the motherboard lights up when power is connected. There is no beeps, no cpu spinning, no hard drive spinning when I hit the power button. Any help would be appreciated. |

Hi Benbo777 and welcome to Dev Shed.
Sounds to me like your motherboard has failed. Open up the case again and make sure that all connections are properly connected (incase something has become loose when you were hoovering). Also, try removing the CMOS battery for about 2 minutes and then replace and try to boot.

Thanks for the reply Aitken325i. It looks like everything is attached properly and I've removed the CMOS battery for a couple of minutes, but it's still not working. Any other advice as to what I might try?

I think you may have to replace your motherboard as it sounds like it has failed. It is also possible that it has taken your CPU with it.
Does anything happen at all when you switch it on ? Any more lights appear on your mobo ? Do any of the lights dim ? Last edited by aitken325i : September 19th, 2006 at 11:00 AM. |

Absolutely nothing happens when I press the power button. No lights, no CPU whirr, no beeps, no hard disk whirr.

Have you tried another PSU ? In one of your posts above you said you had lights on your mobo.
There is the danger that if the PSU has blown, it has taken the mobo with it. Try swapping it out, they aren't all that expensive these days. |

If your PSU has not blown then it could be a device shorting the system. Try the PSU test first but if it does not work then try disconnecting devices and testing them one by one. One shorting device will cause the whole system to not power up.

Also, try to run the computer outside of the box. Lay the mobo on a non metal surface that will not conduct electricity. Hook only the essentials up (psu, mobo, processor, ram, and graphics card,) and try running it. If it boots up, something is shorting out. Another note: try putting all of the necessary components into another motherboard -- it's an easy way to test your old mobo. |
