Need Help removing motherboard
HI, I have just purchased a replacement motherboard for a dell dimension desktop. I have removed the chasis ( I think that is the correct term) from the case, and I have removed the 8 screws, however, the motherboard is still attached by some weird little hard plastic things poking thru from the CPU. PS I am replacing the processor also.
Please help, as the computer is spread out all over the floor! THanks STacy |

on the bottom side of the plastic clips are little "barbs" (for lack of a better word) those "barbs" have to be pinched inward at the same time and pushed up through the holes.
Most "computer tool kits" come with special little pincher tools for this purpose. |

THanks!! But since I am so mentally challaged can you elaborate. I see 4 plastic "barbs" on the back side, they are white with a little black thing on them, do I pinch them individually, I can't imagine how I can pinch all 4 at the same time, and I do not have the pincher tool, I am reduced to pliers and a leatherman tool. I tried to pinch one of them, and all I managed to do was break off the black thing!! |

Did you get new ones with your motherboard ? If not, take care not to break them otherwise you won't be able to secure your new motheroard!

There are several different styles of the clips so I can't be certain... but you might try using your fingers and holding the barbs in and pushing the clip up through the hole at the same time...
If you have small fingers it may not work as easily if one finger tip can't compress more than one of the tabs/barbs aitken325i makes a point that if you do have new clips to use you can just cut the old ones off... |

Thank you both for your help and patience! I have purchased a new motherboard as well as a new CPU complete with heat sinc, etc.
My only interest is getting the chasis or the "motherboard holder" off, so I can get the new motherboard and cpu installed in the computer. The old motherboard is my issue. The cpu is attached to the motherboard. there are two silver clips that can be squeezed and the CPU moves but has some little black things holding it in. I am not concerned with the cpu, but trying to get the chasis. on the back side of the chasis there are 4 white little plastic screw things that I think hold the cpu clips into place, all i need to do is rescue the chasis, but I can not seem to get it off from the motherboard, due to the cpu. Does this make since?? All your help is soo appreciated. |

sorry not familair with what you're describing...
usually the mobo is fastened above the plate with little "risers" that screw into the plate they may be brass or plastic usually the screws that hold the mobo down screw into these risers...is it possible that there is still a screw hidden by the CPU or heatsink? If this is your first experience be very careful attaching the new CPU and heatsink to the new main board. Be careful not to use too much pressure on the board . some heatsink clips require a firm hand and the mobo should fully supported. Don't forget to be careful of static charges. |

Here's a link to a visual guide to installing a new motherboard, hope it helps some. Any problems though, don't hesitate to pop back ==> Clicky
There is a few visual guides under 'Replacing PC Parts' that might help you along the way also. |
