PC-Chips M870 won't boot from CD-ROM/ floppy
Hi there,
I am currently building a new PC and have gotten as far as trying to install Windows onto it. The first time I tried to install XP it got as far as partitioning/ formatting the drive before it gave up saying that the hard drive was bad. Now I have a new hard drive & have been trying to install XP again but this time it will not allow me to boot from the CD or from the floppy drive. In the case of the CD, the drive does not seem to be doing anything when it should be accessing the CD. I have tried switching CD-ROM's with no effect. With the floppy drive, it access's the disk for a few moments & then the screen goes blank & it does nothing. I have tried the default BIOS settings as well as clearing the CMOS but the problem remained. I have no idea about what is going wrong here so any suggestions would be appreciated. The specs are: AMD Sempron 3000+ PC Chips M870 (v2.0) CRUCIAL 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz Geforce FX5200 8X AGP Card Thanks |

Hi nemiseph and welcome to Dev Shed.
Lets begin from the start - have you opened the case to ensure all drives are connected properly ?

Hi aitkin, thanks for the welcome. I have reconnected all of the drives and the BIOS has detected them. The lights on the CD & floppy drive also come on so I think that they are fine.

Ok, and are the drive/s spinning when the Windows CD is inserted ?

It spins as usual at startup & briefly when it tries to boot from the CD, the light comes on as well. That doesn't last more than a second or so.
The floppy will start to spin & whir for a few seconds when trying to boot from it before that stops as well. |

does the bios recognize the hard drive and the CD drive properly ?
have you double checked to make sure the first boot device is the CD drive? |

The hard drive, CD-ROM & floppy drive are detected by the BIOS. I've checked the boot order as well & the CD is the first device that it will go to.

do you have any other bootable media you can try? just to eliminate the possibillity it is the XP disk causing at least part of the problem...

I've tried my Win2k cd and another hard drive with Windows on as well with exactly the same problem.

Do you mean that your drive can't read that CD either ?? If so, sounds like you may have a faulty drive.

I'm pretty sure that the drive is ok as I tried another CD-ROM with it & it wouldn't read from there either. It seems quite odd.

Do you have a spare IDE cable ? If so, swap out the cable for the CD drive and retry.

Just tried a different cable and it doesn't make a difference. Is it possible that its a problem with the motherboard itself?

Yes, that was what I was coming onto next !
Did you just recently buy the mobo ? If so, it should still be under warranty so you should be able to return it. |
