Pc Not Posting But Has Power

I have friends pc that i have installed a new hard drive and new memory. Since installing the components the pc will not boot or even beep at start up.

Basically nothing happens other than power to the fan and drives etc.

I have tried booting with none of the drives connected and with the old memory back in but still nothing. Even tried without memory and still nothing.

I suspect its the motherboard although i am not sure how it could have happened. The memory that was replaced was 256 ddr2700 and was replaced with 2 512 ddr3200. I did some research before and am sure that should have been fine.

The only thing i can think of that may have cause it was the second hd was a little tight installing with the cooler fitted but it did fit without too much trouble. I did release one of the cooler clips though as i was gonna remove the cooler to make it easier but i decided against it and fastened it back in with no trouble.

I have had some advice about getting the mobo tested but i thought i would ask see if anyone had any other suggestions i could try.

I read something about resetting the cmos settings but i wouldnt have thought i would need to do that just for installing new memory

I know i could be barking up the wrong tree and it could be the processor but i know this pc worked before i installed the hd and ramm so its beyond me what could have happened.

I have looked into the ramm situation and i am told that even though i installed faster ram that shouldnt have caused this problem.

I may have caused it while fitting the hard drive if i have knocked the fan and cpu but tbh i am now just thinking everything over in my head to try find a solution.

Any help would be gratefully recieved

Andy

Ps someone told me that as my fans etc are powering up that this shows that the motherboard could in deed be ok. Can some one clarify this please

Hi Retroandy, and welcome to DevShed.

Are you sure that the fans are spinning ? Remove the side cover from the case and plug the machine in and turn on and look inside and let us know.

Although, to be honest, it sounds like your motherboard has fried. When you installed the ram and hard-drive, did you remember to earth yourself before touching the components inside the case ? Static electricity from your body can damage the motherboard and unfortunately, I think this could be the case.

Tbh i think that too mate but i can deffo say that power is getting to the board or at least the fans.

I have taken it in to a local shop who are testing the board and processor by swapping things about as i didnt have spare cpu or board.

Fingers crossed though.

Thanks for ya reply.

Gonna have a good browse around as i am sure there is plenty to keep us occupied on ere.
