i have a Gigabyte motherboard with an Intel Pentium IV 1.7GHz CPU. Sometimes, my system will produce a sound at which point my keyboard and mouse will stop working. Rebooting the system seems to fix it sometimes.

You may have a defective mouse or keyboard... likely the mouse has an intermittent problem in the cable, which happens after a lot of use. Try using another mouse and see if the problem disappears.

What activities are you engaged in when this problem occurs? Are you running certain programs, perhaps or using a network connection?
