Problem installing more ram - gigabyte GA-7DXE

I have a GA7DXE motherboard. It already has 2 sticks of 256 ram (266 DDR). There is one slot left and try as I might every time I install a stick of 512 ram (again 266 DDR) the machine refuses to boot up - take the stick of 512 ram out and no problem. I had similar trouble with an earlier stick of 512 Ram which I put down to it being faulty. Now I'm not so sure.

Any idea what the problem is as the motherboard handbook says that memory size can vary between sockets.
