do you actually have a replacement motherboard? if you don't then i suggest not even trying, if the motherboard dies then over half of the computer is dead, on laptops the motherboard includes the CPU and video card, sometimes the wifi too, that means if your motherboard died its usually not worth it and its often a nightmare to do that type of work on a laptop

but if you do have your hands on a new motherboard already and you have called Dell and they won't do it under warranty then you might as well go ahead and try the replacement assuming your laptop is already dead (if its works then i would try it, its too big of a risk)

how to replace it is available on Dells site, you just need to do some searching clickey

Dell inspiron 6000 motherboard replacement

Hi Edman,

Thanks for your advice.

You should know that Dell tech support guided me through some tests of my inspiron 6000 and concluded that I do need a new motherboard. That is all tech support said in terms of what had to be replaced. He did not mention the other items you refer to in your post.

You should also know that my insperon 6000 was purchased only 14 months ago and that I have not yet purchased a new dell motherboard. Apparently, one can only get one from Dell itself (is that right?) and it charges $300.00 plus another $200.00 to do the labor.

I have a computer tech Savoy friend of mine who can replace the motherboard if that becomes my ultimate decision.

Edman, given the fact that my laptop is 14 months old and the costs of replacing the motherboard, do you have any opinion whether it is worth it for me to spend the money to replace the motherboard? I hear people saying that it is not worth doing that since a new Dell costs about $800.00 (after rebates etc.) -- but I called Dell sales and a new laptop with all the bells and whistles I now have would run me about $1,000.00.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Antone
