SATA and RAID

I am a software developer, working from an office at home, but have multiple PCs, web servers etc. and am looking to build a new, secure dataserver, which will sit in a 19" rack. Although it will not need dual processors, it will need RAID 1 and I am keen to use the latest components, but on a budget (of course).

In putting together my 'shopping' list, I see that motherboards are now being offered with both SATA and RAID. My understanding is that for my use, SATA is now a viable alternative to SCSI and having a RAID controller built onto the board, appears to offer everything I need in a pretty cheap package. Just add a case, a couple of hard drives and some memory and job done.

Do these boards, typically costing around £100, really offer this ideal or should I be looking at plug-in RAID cards etc.?

I'm just getting into RAID myself, so hopefully I don't lead you astray. All this is based on what I've read instead of my experiences, which is usually how I answer questions.

I don't see any reason to get a separate RAID card if it's built on the motherboard. Motherboards seem to be offering more and more with each new model (5.1 sound was added a while back). I'm guessing the onboard RAID uses the system memory, and with it being cheap and fast, that seems like a great solution. However, the onboard cards are limited in RAID options, usually only offering RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 0+1. I would think for a dataserver you would want to go with RAID 5, which you'd have to get a separate card to do.
