System wont start!
Hi i have a system which does not start. When i press the power button the front leds light up for a second and the system goes off. I was using my system and then all of a sudden it went off...realised it was the PSU so i changed it but after installing the new PSU the system wont start. Is there any ideas on what else might be the problem???
When i disconnect my Serial Hard drive my System turns on but theres no beep...only lights...no video! Any ideas??? Thnx in advance. Specs: 550 Watt PSU (NEW) Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000-G - P4 motherboard - 865PE P4 3Ghz Processor Socket 478 1Gb Ram (512 x 2) PC3200 Dual channel XFX Geforce 7800GS Extreme Edition 256 MB Video Card (NEW) 200GB Serial ATA Last edited by aitken325i : January 25th, 2007 at 09:52 AM. Hi dakz123 and welcome to Dev Shed.
As you may have noticed, I have edited your thread to change the size of the font that you had used. It sounds to me like your motherboard may have failed. Can you try removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes before replacing and then trying to boot again ?

Hi aitken325i
Thanks for your reply. I have tried removing the CMOS battery and i dont think it will be a BIOS issue because i have got dual BIOS. I get the same results when i put the battery back in again! |

Do you get any lights on on the motherboard at all ?
It does sound like you have a failed motheboard though. |

its also a good idea to disconnect everything from the motherboard and trying to start it with minimal configuration.
eg. CPU(and cooling fan of course), 1 memory bank filled and if no on-board video then your graphics's card. |

What is the make/model of your PSU?
Is it a generic one? Some generic ones say they are a certain wattage but actually provide much less and also have week rails. |

Hi thanks for your reply
I do get lights on my motherboard...theres no burnt smell or any caps that look damaged. When i take of my Graphics card and RAM...systems beeps as it should. Could it still be motherboard?? I was suspecting my motherboard too but now im not too sure! |

Hey drbibber...I took off the components as you said and installed them one at a time but i get the same results.
Hey IceDragon...my new PSU is 550Watts (A-Link). My previous power supply was 400Watts and i had to change it as my graphics card requires a lot of power. One thing i noticed though is that the DC outtage of my new 550W PSU is less than the 400W PSU i had. Could this be the problem? I cant seem to find a PSU with the same DC outtage is the 400W PSU i had. Shame its fan has burnt out. |

I still have a feeling that the PSU you bought isnt cutting the mustard...I had to replace a 600w generic as it wasnt able to cope with my x1950pro (system wouldnt start most times and when it did it would restart soon after). Changed to an OCZ Powerstream 520w and system boots first time everytime.

A good solid PSU for 30bucks can be bought here . A few of the guys on DevH forums (devshed sister site) use them to power up c2d setups with 7900 gpu and have no problems at all.
No point spending more than you have to. ![]() |
