Hi cramer and welcome to Dev Shed.
As you may have noticed, I have split your thread off from the one you originally posted in as it's always best to start a new thread. Have you tried a bare bones system with just attching the RAM, graphics and a drive to see if it boots ? Are the optical drives and hard drives recognised in the BIOS ?

ok
did it, it would boot and recognise the cd but not sata. tried diff. things but no go. i tried to install the os, it would start loading files but when it came time to load os to the drive it sent an error message of not locating any hard drives on the computer. tried this several times with no luck. finally installed ide drive and unplugged sata and it went ok. i had to install pci modem and pci graphics card to get it working. graphics are better but still doesnt detect original modem, no sound, cd doesnt properly communicate. im afraid to try any new drivers because of probs caused earlier. ?? |

OK, can you download and run MemTest against your machine. This will check the validity of the RAM on your machine. It won't be the first time that I've had errors on new machines due to faulty RAM.

tried memtest but im not used to running command lines. the screen would open but when i typed the words and hit enter it flickerd and closed.? my os is the first version of xp with all the updates. i bought everything from tiger direct. the ram is one stick of ultra; ULT 30215 512MB PC3200 CL3 DDR 400Mhz. its in the first slot.
under my computer properties it shows to recognise about 490 mb of ram. is this good or should i stick with ram names recommended by the mb book? banging head! i shut it down and stuck my ide hd back into my old computer. i still appreciate any more info. thanks |
