Unhappy Yes, it's boot up problem, but every one of them is unique

Hey guys,

My old system that used to works just fine in the old case:

AMD Athlon 2200
ECS K7SEM Socket A (Socket 462)
SiS730S chipset
RAM: 2 sticks of 256MB (512 total) PC100/133 MHz
Radeon 9200 AGP video card

well, basically, i bought a new computer case. I installed everything myself (i knew what i was doin. I know how to put the computer together, but i don't know everything. I DID wear antistatic protection while doing this.). So, anyways, i set up all the wires right and everything, and i finally go to test it out, and i plug everything in, and it doesn't work. Nothin happens at all, i press the power button, and nothing at all happens (Problem #1). I tried many things, but i couldn't get it going, and also the motherboard was not recieving the electricity. (I know this because when the power supply is on, the wirless internet reciever has an "power light" on it, and it lights up when it recieves power, even if the comp isn't running. The wirless internet thing is hooked up to the motherboard by USB, which are built into the mother board.) So, i had a friend come over, and he knows what he's doing. so we look at it for a while, and we plug it in w/ the old power supply, and take everything out of the new case. (we took out the hardrives, floppy drive, and CD drives.) We turn on the old power supply, and it doesn't get power. So, then we take out the modem card, and we take out a few screws from the motherboard, and all of the sudden it's receiving power (the light on the internet thing turned on, and at this point the only thing that's plugged in is the motherboard to the powersupply). So, we press the power button on the case, and it runs like normal. (I'm pretty sure the lil red LED came on, on the motherboard, and the processor fan WAS spinning.)(Fixed Problem #1). So, we put everything back in the case, hooked it all up, and we turn the computer on, and it boots up like normal, everything looks good, except nothing displays on the monitor. The monitor is jus black screen, as if it were not connected to the comp.(Problem #2) At this time (the first time trying it, i wasn't sure if the processor fan was spinning or not.). I've tried many many many things, and i get the same result every time. What happens is:

*Computer looks & sounds like it's startin up like normal
*Case fans light up and spin, but are not connected to the motherboard, they are connected to the power supply.
*Harddrive makes it's usual boot up noises
*processor fan does NOT spin when connected to the motherboard, but does spin when connected to the power supply
*Lil red LED on the motherboard turns on

Like i've said i've tried many things. I've tried the old powersupply as well. (old powersupply is 300W, and new powersupply is 350W.) I've tried only supplying the motherboard with power. I've tried the motherboard and master harddrive only. I've loosened screws on the motherboard. And other things.

My thoughts are that i damaged certain parts of the motherboard and/or processor in someway. I might have fried the mother board and/or processor.

I really hope i don't have to replace the motherboard and/or processor, but i think i might have to. if i have to, where do i start as far as motherboard shopping? I'm looking towards getting an AMD motherboard cause of price, and what ill be using the comp for. Can i get any motherboard as long as the FSB on the processor, the motherboard, and RAM are compatible? My old motherboard was Socket A (socket 462), so, if i get another motherboard, does the new one have to be Socket A as well? Or can it be any socket i choose? also, i'd like to get a new mother board and processor that is compatible with my current RAM (PC100/133), because i really do not want to spend money on new RAM, im already low on moeny as it is right now.

I think that's jus about all. If i think of anymore questions, ill post them, but i think this is enough for now. I don't have a lot of money right now, but i was thinkin i could get a good motherboard and processor combo under $100.

THNX,
Nick

I thought of one more question:
I'm running windows XP home edition, and if i get a new motherboard and/or processor, will i have to format my hardrives? (yes, i have more than 1 harddrive).

If you are gonna buy new parts, Newegg.com is the place I shop. I'm sure most of everyone else does too.

With a quick look at what they have, I came up with this stuff.

REFURBISHED: MSI Motherboard for AMD Processors Model K7N2 Delta-L For $35

AMD Sempron 2200+ 1.5GHz, 333MHz FSB, 256KB L2 Processor - OEM For $48

Rosewill 256MB DDR PC-2700 For $37

Total = $120

A little over $100 but I added the ram in there cause you are in serious need of an upgrade in that department. 256 is a good start. You can then just buy another chip once you get more money.

If you are unsure of getting a refurbished motherboard, here is a new one.

ASUS "A7V400-MX" VIA KM400A Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU For $48 Only $13 more.

Brings Total to $133

Hope this helps.
