Do you actually want 9/9/200 stored in that field at all? You might want to declare the field as VARCHAR then, instead of SMALLDATETIME or DATETIME. Neither SMALLDATETIME nor DATETIME can hold a date like 9/9/200, since it is out of their valid date ranges.
For your reference, SMALLDATETIME can hold dates between January 1, 1900, through June 6, 2079 with accuracy of 1 minute. DATETIME can hold dates between January 1, 1753 through December 31, 9999 with accuracy of 0.0033 seconds. 9/9/200 doesn't fit in either range, so you'll need to store it in a CHAR or VARCHAR field (if you want to store it, that is).
