Question Question about data encryption

Hello,

I would like to encrypt some user data, with character ASCII values changed from numbers between 32 and 127 to numbers above 127. Is that possible in MS SQL (or any other similar DB system). i.e. Can the VARCHAR data type contain character values between 128 and 255 without causing problems? If not, any other suggestions?

The reason I am asking this rather than trying it out is that my hosting company provides for MS SQL 2000, but I do not have it enabled as yet. I am still in the development stage...

Any help much appreciated.
