Anyone build their own linux media server ?
Call me lazy, but I get tired of putting single DVD movies into the player, let alone finding the movie in the first place. I wish I had all my movies in a giant raid array drive system and I could setup movie playlists like I do with MP3's.
This got me to thinking about putting something like my own "media" server together with a linux based system. How much space on disk does a typical DVD movie take up ? Ive heard the divx format can shrink movie size, how much are we talking about ? Wouldnt it be cool to have all your movies on your computer instead of fumbling with disks. One day, i bet disks will be a thing of the past, much as cassettes are now with music content. |

A typical movie is 4-6gb + special features. A dual layer DVD capacity is 8.5gb, so obviously some movies (like LOTR directors cut) are larger.
DivX can reduce the size of a movie down to 1-2 cd's (700-1500mb) but is obviously not the same quality (though it can be quite good).
