Can Sigma Del Audio mic jack be used for line in?

Hi... I suddenly found myself with only a laptop, (Dell Inspiron 1150) that has an onboard Sigma Del Audio multimedia device. With my desktop I did a lot of line-in recording, but this doesn't seem possible with the laptop...(no sound)... HOWEVER... when I use the Control Panel applet to "Test Audio Hardware", I get sound from my input signal on the "test speakers" portion of the test... (albeit with an annoying amount of latency)...

The computer is a Pentium 2.8 Ghz with 512M of RAM.

My question: Is this possible, and how do I configure the device to receive a low (or no) latency line signal into the mic jack, since there is no line-in jack on the device, or anywhere else on the computer?

For more clarification, feel free to email... mobskev gmail. I think I've provided all I know how to provide, but I'll do my best.

Thanks all!
sk3v

help

you would need probably need an external firewire device... what os are you using? i'm not a fan of behringer but they have an interface for under a $100. i have several machines and i've been using a similar set-up on all of them. (i used to "line in" as well up until 5 years ago ...using my souncard and sound forge).
i got the alesis io 14 for my mac(macX/XP pro) recently and encountered the following problem, can anyone help me??
i cannot change my audio input/output device through the control panel.
i use a 3gig macbook pro to run macX and XP pro sp2 operating systems.
i have an external firewire i/o that i need to set as my audio device.
works great with mac OS.
XP also recognizes the device & i updated all drivers. device manager and all hardware profiles are good, no errors, no yellow question marks. all my audio software recognize the device as well. it just needs to be set as the "go-to" device. when i go to sound devices dropdown menu through the control panel, the device isnt on the list to be set. only my sigmatel soundcard shows up.
ANY IDEAS??/? thanx, please email doubleole at yahoo dot com
