Could it be the video card?
I have a Toshiba notebook and lately I've been getting a graphic problem with it.
My graphics become messy and the computer simply locks down. I've taken it to two different stores to check the problem and none of them were able to tell me what's wrong. The problem is not continuous, which may indicate software, but I've been told that it could be hardware related when the computer overheats. I'm about to format the hard disk and test it more. Can anybody tell me anything that may be causing this problem? Thanks, Fernando |

When you say the graphics become messy and the computer locks down, what exactly do you mean ?

Could it be the video card?
I get lines all over the display and the system slows down to the point where I need to press the power button to turn it off because I can't work on the computer anymore

Overheating vid card could be (and probably is) the cause of the distorted screen but that shouldnt slow the system down.
Looks like you could have 2 problems. Do you de-frag the hdd regularly? Also do you run any anti-virus software in the background? What is the Laptop specs, ie how much ram and what OS are you running? |

The specs are as follows:
p4 2.0 ghz 40gb hd 512mb ram 32mb video memory (nvidia geforce) 512 cache Win XP pro. I maintain my computer quite regularly. I use a program called Tune up utilities and I defrag my hd every month. I use 2 AV. AVG and AVAST, but I´m formating the HD and I´ll only install 1. I also have a firewall (zone alarm) and I disabled windows´ firewall. I was also told that using a High res such as 1400x1050 (32bit) could be forcing the vid card, but I decreased to 1280x1024 and the problem appeared as well. |

When the system slows down, can you open up Task Manager and see what processes are eating the majority of the CPU power.
Do you mean that you are going to format the HD and start everything from scratch again ? If so, can you post back and let us know if you are still having problems. |

A strange thing happened yesterday before I formated my hd.
The computer was cold, I wasn't using it and when I turned it on, the the lines appeared, which probably rules out overheating. Anyway, I decided to format the HD and the lines were all over my display. After my CD finished loading the setup files, the lines disappeared. I reinstalled many of the softwares I had before and played a DVD to test the system. Up until now, nothing happened. |
