Geforce 6800 Vs. Radeon 9800 pro

Alright i know it's a heated debate between radeon and geforce, but i found a radeon 9800 pro for 250 and a geforece 6800 for 300. I realize geforce 6800's are next generations but i'm worried that since teh 6800 standard is teh bottum of teh 6800 series that it will be slow or just generally a bad round about card. I know the the radeon 9800s are really good but they're still not next generation and only have pixel shader 2.0 and not the geforce 3.0. I'm looking for something really pretty fast and mostly to run a game like far cry or doom at highest quality. Anybody who can tell me weather or not the 6800 is worth 50 bucks more would be greatly appreciated.

well the 9800 is available for $200, but im sure u could also find the 6800 for less than $300 if u looked better. i dont know what else to tell you. im playing far cry on the highest settings with the 9800 just fine, but for doom3, well there's not even a card out yet that can yield the full potential of doom3 so what's the point

Nvidia by far makes the best graphics products, well at least if you step up to highend graphics such as Quadro, then your talking about dual sync DVI

The 6800 is a generation newer than the 9800 pro, and will acordingly give significantly better performance. It does cost ~$100 more, but you do get a big boost. The 6800GT is faster still, and the 6800 Ultra Extreme is the top.
Comperable ATI cards are the x800 series (Pro and platinum XT).
The Nvidia Quadro and ATI FireGL are workstation type cards, not really meant for gaming use.

Smile

I have Radeon 9800 pro, looks really good on both of my 23" Sony LCD & Apple Cinema LCD.
Are you going to use it to play games or DVD?

so.......

so even though the cheaper 6800 is at the bottom of the newer family, it would still perform as a generation better than the 9800 right? it wouldn't just be a expensive slow card?

Not worth a new card, just up your resolution. (pervert )

That is correct. You can see a comparison of the base 6800 with the 9800xt here and the 9800xt is a step above the 9800pro, so you can see the improvements.

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040809/doom3-03.html

There is a pretty big jump in power from the normal 6800 ($299) to the 6800 Ultra ($499). For that matter even to the 6800 GT ($399). There doesn't seem to be that much of a difference between the GT and the Ultra though. Not sure if its worth the extra $100 to jump from the GT to the Ultra. But I do think its worth the extra $100 from a normal 6800 to the GT.

Just my two pennies....

The nVidia 6800 GT is probably the sweet spot. It outperforms the x800 pro, costs less than the x800 XT and 6800 Ultra, and can likely be OC'd to Ultra performance levels. I don't think its worth the extra $100 for the Ultra.

Nice. I wish we had Fry's in the midwest
Though its probably just as well, as I'd spend all my money there.
