The 8800 gts is indeed a good card, but if you decide to have a big screen (24" and greater) it will show its limits very soon on the latest games.

If you are not an afficionado of nvidia, I would go for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 Mo if you're not affraid of the noise.

Indeed this card may make noise if confined in a narrow space, but offers great performances for a good price (there is almost no differences with the 8800 gts price) even on big screens.

EDIT : and if you want to save some money and if you are on a 20" or a 22" I suggest you take a look at the HD 4850 512 Mo which is really good value for money and well-balanced.

The new 4870 X2 is now the fastest and it excels at very high resolutions. The GTX 280 is almost as good and a lot quieter.

I think it's a bit off topic to talk about these cards...

The 4870 X2 costs way much than $500...
Even the GTX 280 price is above $500

That's why I didn't mention these cards.

We're not trying to see which card is the best on the market right now, but the most suitable for your build (and your budget), and I do think the 4870 512 Mo, is the best choice (I may change my choice once you have told us how big will be your screen).

Indeed, you didn't say what will be the size of your screen... It is not worth to buy a top-notch card if your playing on a 21 (or less) inches screen...

The most important is to have a well-balanced build in order to make the most of each component.

If you are below 22 inches, you can save more than $100 by choosing the 4850 which is enough to play the latest games like Call of Duty 4 or Unreal Tournament III (with texture filters enabled) on 19", 20" and even 22".

If you are on 24" or considering upgrading to a 24" screen in the future (or if you don't need to save money), it would better to go for the 4870
